Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) Detection Kit
Introduction
Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) is a major cause of chronic respiratory disease in poultry and is frequently involved in polymicrobial respiratory infections in broiler chickens. In broilers, MG infection can lead to increased carcass condemnation rates at processing plants. In laying hens and breeder flocks, infection is often subclinical but may cause a reduction in egg production throughout the laying cycle.
Turkeys are generally more susceptible to M. gallisepticum infection. Affected birds commonly develop swollen infraorbital sinuses, which is why the disease is often referred to as infectious sinusitis. MG infections occur worldwide in chickens and turkeys, causing substantial economic losses, particularly in large-scale commercial poultry operations. The pathogen is also commonly detected in backyard and non-commercial flocks.
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a highly sensitive molecular diagnostic method for the rapid detection of Mycoplasma gallisepticum DNA in poultry samples. A positive PCR result may indicate an active infection or bacterial shedding. Because conventional bacterial isolation is time-consuming and labor-intensive, PCR is widely used as a preferred method for confirming MG infection in poultry flocks.
