introduction

Brucella is a zoonotic pathogen named after David Bruce, who first isolated it. It can enter the human body through the skin, respiratory tract, or digestive tract and cause infection. Brucella produces potent endotoxins, and infection is mainly characterized by prolonged fever, excessive sweating, joint pain, generalized fatigue, and body aches.

The primary sources of infection are diseased animals such as sheep, cattle, and pigs. Direct person-to-person transmission is rare.

Brucella is a Gram-negative, small coccobacillus with bluntly rounded ends. Bipolar staining may occasionally be observed. It is non-motile and does not form spores or capsules. It usually occurs singly and only rarely in pairs or short chains. Because the bacteria are very small, they are difficult to detect by Gram staining. Therefore, Kozlowski staining (Köster staining) is generally used.
